We are once again under an increased national threat level. We've learned from experience that when threat levels increase, airline security procedures tighten, delays are common, and travelers experience increased travel stress. This is a new reality of travel that will be with us far into the future. Try these tips to reduce the hassles and expedite security clearance efficiently.
1. Do your homework. Know the current rules and follow with them to the letter. Get the latest security scoop at http://www.tsatraveltips.us or by calling TSA at 866-289-9673.
2. Check your bags carefully to avoid inadvertently packing restricted items. Although security rules allow some previously restricted items such as tweezers, nail files, and certain types of blunt scissors in carry-on bags, why tempt fate? Pack all metal travel necessities in checked baggage or purchase them at your destination and don't worry about potential restricted items. However, it is important to pack film and cameras with film in a carry-on bag. Checked baggage screening equipment may damage undeveloped film. Avoid the disappointment of losing precious vacation or family photos.
3. Avoid locking checked bags or sealing them or their contents in vacuum-sealed plastic. If preliminary scanning raises security questions, you may be delayed while bags are opened for search by hand. Once de-vacuumed", clothing that was sealed in plastic may not fit back into your bag. Secure zippers on baggage with tie-locks which can be removed and replaced by security.
4. Dress for success. Have your identification handy at all times. ID's are checked several times during check-in and security clearance. Avoid wearing shoes, clothing and accessories that trigger sensitive metal detectors. Common clothing items that set off detectors are metals including: belt buckles, metal buttons, underwire bras, and jewelry. Love to wear lots of jewelry? Eliminate security problems by placing jewelry you want to wear in a Ziploc bag in your carry-on. Put it on after clearing security.
5. Travel light. Gone are the days of traveling with over-stuffed bags. . . including every pair of shoes in your closet. The less you pack, the easier it is to clear security. Airlines limit checked bags to two per person and charge high fees for excessive or overweight bags. There are many benefits to becoming a carry-on traveler. It may be hard to believe, but you will enjoy the freedom of packing less and traveling light.
6. Allow extra time for longer security lines and increased scrutiny. Cutting it close at the airport guarantees escalated stress and travel problems. Arrive early. Clear security at the earliest possible time. Sit down, relax, enjoy a good book, or people watch.
7. Prepare young travelers for security procedures. Children take their cue from you. Explain what will happen, emphasize security importance, set the example, and reward cooperation.
8. Expedite your walk-through. As you approach the security walk-through scanner, don't wait to be asked. Remove topcoats, shoes, and metal items such as pocket change, watches, belts, cell phones, laptops, and jewelry. Have them ready to place in a bin for screening.
9. Stay alert. If you are delayed walking through the scanner, keep an eye on personal items already on the conveyor. Security is on the lookout for theft,but it is relatively easy for someone to grab your bag and leave the area. Place colorful ribbons or stickers on all bags so that they stand out from the masses of black look-alike bags and are easy to keep in sight.
10. Pleasant cooperation is the order of the day. Don't take it personally if you are singled out for further security checks. Comply without argument. TSA and airline personnel share a common goal to ensure your aviation security. Rather than looking at security as a hassle, become their partner and enjoy a safe and enjoyable journey.
